Sulfur Caves Minecraft: How to Find Them and What to Know
The sulfur caves minecraft added in the Chaos Cubed update are impossible to mistake for any other cave. Where most underground biomes are grey stone and gloom, these glow yellow and red – bands of sulfur and cinnabar striping the walls, sharp spikes hanging from the ceiling, and pools of green water breathing out noxious gas. This guide covers how to find sulfur caves, what Y level to dig at, and how to handle everything inside.

What Are Sulfur Caves?
Sulfur caves are an underground cave biome added in Java Edition 26.2 and Bedrock Edition 26.30 (the Chaos Cubed game drop, June 2026). They generate deep in the deepslate layer, roughly from Y 0 down to Y -32, with the biome at its densest around Y -16.
Do not confuse them with lush caves. Lush caves are green, mossy, and marked by azalea trees on the surface. Sulfur caves are yellow and red, marked by sulfur springs on the surface, and the hazards are completely different – noxious gas instead of drowning, falling spikes instead of dripstone. Our Lush Caves Minecraft guide covers that biome separately.
Sulfur Caves Minecraft: What You Will Find Inside
- Sulfur blocks – bright yellow stone-like blocks in bands across the walls. Full building set: polished, bricks, slabs, stairs, walls, chiseled. Mined with any pickaxe.
- Cinnabar blocks – deep red blocks alongside the sulfur, with the same full family of variants.
- Sulfur spikes – stalactites and stalagmites. Standing on one is harmless, but a falling stalactite hurts, so watch the ceiling.
- Sulfur pools – acid-green water with potent sulfur underneath. The gas they release gives players and mobs the Nausea effect. Do not linger.
- Sulfur cubes – a passive, slime-like mob. It absorbs a block you feed it and changes how it moves: feed it wood and it bounces, feed it ice and it slides. Large ones can be picked up with an empty bucket.
How to Find Sulfur Caves Minecraft: 4 Methods
Method 1: Look for Sulfur Springs on the Surface
Sulfur springs generate on the Overworld surface directly above sulfur caves. They look like small bubbling ponds ringed with yellow sulfur and red cinnabar, sometimes with magma blocks. Springs come in small, medium, large, and huge sizes. Dig down beside (not directly under) a spring and you will drop into the cave below. This is the most reliable surface marker in the game for any cave biome.
Method 2: Use the Seed Map
Open our Minecraft Seed Map, enter your world seed, and switch the biome layer to the underground view. Sulfur caves show up distinctly against regular deepslate. Note the coordinates of a large patch, then dig down to it in-game. This is the fastest method if you want sulfur for a specific build.
Method 3: The /locate Command

With cheats enabled:
` /locate biome minecraft:sulfur_caves `
The game returns the nearest sulfur cave coordinates. Note that the command sometimes points at a small sulfur pool rather than a full biome – if you arrive and find only a puddle, look around; red cinnabar nearby usually means a larger cave is within reach.
Method 4: Cave Normally and Watch for Color
If you prefer exploring, mine at Y -16 (the biome’s densest level) and watch for yellow or red blocks in the walls. The moment you see sulfur or cinnabar, you have found the biome’s edge. Sulfur pools can occasionally be spotted from the surface too, which is a strong hint.
Sulfur Caves Y Level
The biome generates from about Y 0 down to Y -32. For the best odds:
- Y -16 – densest generation, best level for a mining tunnel.
- Y 0 to Y -10 – upper edges, thinner patches.
- Y -20 to Y -32 – lower sections, often larger chambers.
Dig a horizontal tunnel at Y -16 through deepslate and you will cross into sulfur caves sooner or later.
Dangers in Sulfur Caves

- Noxious gas – sulfur pools release gas that inflicts Nausea on players and mobs standing in water touching it. Bring milk to clear the effect, and do not fight near pools.
- Falling spikes – sulfur stalactites can fall like dripstone. Do not stand under them, and be careful when mining the ceiling.
- Cave spiders – sulfur caves can host cave spiders alongside sulfur cubes. Bring a sword, not just a pickaxe.
- Depth – at Y -16 and below, you are in diamond and ancient debris territory, but also far from the surface. Bring food, torches, and a way back up.
What to Do With Sulfur and Cinnabar
Both blocks come with complete building families – polished, bricks, slabs, stairs, walls, and chiseled variants, all craftable at a crafting table or stonecutter. Sulfur’s bright yellow and cinnabar’s deep red are unlike any other Overworld palette, making them popular for warning stripes, Nether-themed builds (without going to the Nether), and autumn builds.
The sulfur cube is worth experimenting with too. Feed different blocks to small cubes and watch how their movement changes – it is one of the most toy-like mobs Mojang has added, and players are already building minigames around them.
